As I was watching Aubie the Tiger’s Capital One Mascot Challenge Video, it hit me. How hard would it be to actually exercise in a mascot suit and expect to get results?
The answer: Incredibly hard with little to no results. Sure you’d sweat a lot more than you would normally, but you wouldn’t be able to run very far or have the movement to lift heavy-weights.
For many of us, I think this exactly represents our faith. We show up, expecting to get results, but with the wrong attitude and appearance. We’d rather cheer others on, much like a mascot, then be in the game making an impact.
We think that just showing up is going to get the job done. We attend church, campus ministries, school clubs, small groups, or bible studies with the right intentions but the wrong attitude and intentions of what we need to do.
We allow things to weigh us down, to slow us down from getting to the points that God needs us to be with. We dream big dreams full of money and fame, we wish away our future on selfish goals, and average American lives. In our times of singleness, we wish it away on someone else. We constantly crave attention by members of the opposite sex, hoping to feel special and beautiful with their affections.
Much like the mascot outfit, our worldly desires and problems weigh us down from the God-sized results we think we’re achieving…When in reality, we’re just breaking a sweat with no result.
Showing up with your intentions and your dreams for what you want God to do for you is going to get you no where. You don’t have the authority or resume to make deals with God.
Show up with one intention: I am going to obey God no matter what He tells me, when He tells me. This isn’t my life to live, but mine to give to the One who loves me most.
