Set Sail

May 17, 2013 Comments Off on Set Sail

After many years of college, I have come to a very valuable conclusion that I wish I could tell myself many many years ago.

I realized that I was living in a critical fallacy that I believe thousands, if not millions, of people still believe to this day.

It’s sort of a long and complicated problem, but bare with me as I explain it.

For many years of my life, I truly was living under the belief that I can attain friends in my life by simply succumbing to their interests. It was a subconscious habit that I didn’t even realize I was actually living out until recently. I saw all the “popular” people, the ones that everybody knew their name, doing something or being at a certain place. I believed that’s what I needed to do or be at that place doing those things to have their kind of attention attention. I believed that in order to attain the amount of friends or social standing they had, I simply needed to copy and paste what they did into my life and I could get to that same place.

I truly don’t believe it’s a conscious thing or decision you make, but it’s something that you might find yourself doing everyday if you simply analyze your own life.

So, am I merely saying the 100 year old question “If someone jumps off a cliff, are you going to do it too?” No.

It’s time to pause your life, think about where you’re headed, and either continue or set sail for a new destination.

To truly reach your God-given purpose and maximum impact on your world it requires a lot of thought and sacrifice.

Setting sail for a new era in your life requires that you head to sea alone, with no crew. It requires that you may not know exactly how to get where you want to go, but you’re going to trust God to fill your boat with the crew you need to succeed on your journey and fill your sails with the energy needed to reach your destination.

True and meaningful relationships always abide by the rule “like attracts like.”

Plain and simply, actually live out who you want to be and God will provide the people along side your life. Don’t be afraid to walk alone, know that the trail in your life is very long and has many opportunities for God to put someone(s) next to you.

Don’t be afraid to start by yourself, know that you won’t end alone.

Proverbs 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

Wrong Well

John 4:1-26 (Woman at the well)

We believe that we have to hide our sin to be a christian, we believe that we have to hide our deficiencies – that we have to be perfect to be a christian. But we have to allow ourselves to expose our flaws and sins to Jesus to be healed.

There are so many of us that go to the wrong wells that we go to draw our source of happiness and life.We go to all the wrong wells to satisfy our thirst. 3 wells that we go to that are wrong:

  1. Well, I am not worthy. We ask God why He would even want someone want us, a sinner. We feel that we are unworthy of Gods love and that we can’t be of any use to His plan. However, when God lays out commands for our life we are supposed to follow. But sometimes we feel like God is asking too much of us and we will always fall short. But I don’t have it and God doesn’t need it- holiness is not what God wants from me, it’s what He wants for me. It’s why Jesus died. God doesn’t command me to live life His way to deprive me of what is good, He commands me to live a certain way to get something that is so much better. If we knew how much Jesus wanted to bless us, we wouldn’t be focused on how much we are missing out on when all of our friends are having sex and drinking. We do not know that plan that God has for our life. Do not ever think that anyone has ever done something great for God that hasn’t sacrificed an even greater cost for the cause of Jesus on this earth. God’s commands aren’t about what we wants from me, but for me. If you knew who God was, you wouldn’t have to fall into sin to be satisfied. We tell God what He can and cannot do in our lives, even though Jesus is Lord.
  2. Well, it’s too hard. We feel like we really want to change and live our life for God, but we think our situation is too hard to live the way God has called us to live. It’s time to stop going to the same source of your happiness. The source of true satisfaction is what Jesus wants to do inside of us. We think that if we get the right relationship, the right GPA, the right salary, but we will never be satisfied because it’s the wrong well. We feel like the pain is too much, like we can’t go on because our life is so devastating but we are neglecting to realize the reality of what was nailed to a cross two thousand and twelve years ago. We do not need what the world tries to tell us what we need to do, what we need to sacrifice because we have a spring of living water inside of us- we have a God that loves us more than anyone ever could. Even if we aren’t feeling loved from the person we love, we have a father in heaven that loves us. God calls us out of our sin, He doesn’t overlook it and pretend it’s not there. We have to let go and leave the other wells of our happiness for the spring of living water that Jesus offers us! We think that the next relationship is going to satisfy us, the next hookup, the next girlfriend and boyfriend will do for us will make us happy. But it will never satisfy our soul that we have so longed to satisfy for years of pain we have gone through. It’s not going to work.
  3. Well, not now. We want to live our college life, we want to live the wild life and we will get our act together later. Jesus doesn’t ask for a raincheck, the time is now. We are placed on the earth for a very specific reason- every day we have to live for God. God wants to clean us up where we are at, to show us off and use us because He loves us and made us. Jesus wants to change us not because He is ashamed of us, but because He wants to use us and show what He can do through the least of these.

We are all human beings and fall short of the glory of God. But the moment when we put our foot down and realize that Jesus is our source of happiness, love, and joy- we find a whole new level of our relationship with God.

Vertical or Horizontal?

April 13, 2012 Comments Off on Vertical or Horizontal?

As we continue to grow into our lives, we have new objectives and new goals each and every day. As we continue to grow in our relationship with others, we get deeper and deeper with our feelings. And as we continue to grow in our relationship with God we continue to grow closer in our communication with Him.

However, sometimes we focus too much on our horizontal life and forget about our vertical one.

Jesus says in Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Notice that Jesus did not say that we should put our treasures where our own hearts lead us to. So often times we allow our emotions and feelings to lead us into action, whether in a relationship, investment, or decision.

Prayer is our pathway to growing our vertical relationship with God. Becoming closer to Gods heart allows us to follow His perfect plan for our life better by having a better understanding of His will.

Spending too much time in our horizontal relationships trains us to lean on our own understanding; therefore, forgetting about God in general and only seeking what our flesh desires.

Spending too much time in our vertical relationships keeps us from being effective on others. You can never spend too much time with God, but it is possible to neglect the people in our daily lives that need Jesus the most.

Through it all, we serve a God that loves us and created us to spend time with Him- it’s why He created Adam. God wants us to be with Him, God wants us to have a relationship with Him, but a relationship is a two-way street and you have to be willing to make an effort to see your relationship grow with your Heavenly Father.

3 weeks ago, to this day, I adopted my very first puppy. She is a black labrador retriever and full of energy. One of the biggest problems I had training her was getting her used to her kennel because when I would leave, she would become all anxious and cry because she couldn’t be with me.

One of my tactics for helping her cope was that I would leave the room and shut the door, but every so often I would tell her something to reassure her that I was still with her, she just couldn’t see me.

For many of us today, I believe that God opens a door in our life, says something, shuts it, and comes back later.

God will say something to us, maybe even give us a glimpse into what He in store for us to accomplish in our future, but then becomes silent again as the door shuts.

Whether God tells us we are going to have to speak, despite us hating to speak. Whether God is telling us we are about to be tested, I believe God calls us into a season of preparation for what He has in store for next in our life.

You may get a small glance into your future by finding out you have a hidden talent or maybe God lays something on your heart. Nonetheless, I believe that God speaks quietly and softly into our hearts as He wants us to begin to prepare for what He has in store for us.

We may not always be able to see Him in our lives, physically, but He always wants us to know that He is there and knows exactly what today and tomorrow holds for us.

Give Me More

Have you ever considered the concept of why fast food restaurants have large menus, when in reality the variation of what you can actually eat is very small. Out of multiples of combo’s, there are only slight variations- maybe an extra patty or a slice of cheese. Have you ever considered why they do this?

The more we see, as humans, the more we want. Instead of seeing just one hamburger, fast food chains show multiples of hamburgers on their menus- in all the popular ways that their customers like. When it comes time to order, we can’t decide because it all just “looks good”.

I am not here to try to make you feel guilty about that fact that you’re probably already hungry after reading this and thinking about your next big indulgence at your favorite fast food restaurant- there’s something more here that we need to understand.

When it comes to our faith, our quiet times, and our prayer life- we should be no different than how we react to a fast food menu. We should be asking God to show us more of Him, to ask Him to let us want more of His will more our life. Let our prayer be that the more we see of Gods faithfulness, love, and kindness in our life the more we want of Him.

Let us never forget the joy that is found in seeing God do impossible things through us in our life to further His kingdom. Let us never grow weary of being in His presence and wanting more of Him and less of our own desires!

The more I see of you God, the more I want. Let me never grow tired of wanting to see you move in my life!

Messy Message

December 22, 2011 Comments Off on Messy Message

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.”            -2 Corinthians 4:7-11

Throughout our life we are constantly troubled with difficult circumstances; a job loss, a hurtful relationship, a divorce, an abusive childhood, or many other terrible circumstances. The hardest part of these circumstances is that it produces a sense of loneliness and despair in our lives that we do not normally have to deal with.

Whether it was a season of sexual, drug, or physical abuse, whether it was a time of defying God, or whether it was a time of being in a relationship that was the farthest thing from God we all have things that we regret about our life and wish we could do over.

However, I have found that it is our mess that God uses as our message as His messenger. Some biblical references of the truth of that statement is when Saul was transformed and dedicated his life to Christ as Paul, the woman at the well when Jesus reveals himself to her, the immense trials Job had to face, and many other lives Jesus changed.

Rest assured that the pain and suffering is worth knowing that God will be glorified throughout your life because of the trials you have and will overcome.

Live a life of freedom in Christ because He will hold you up. Know that you can withstand anything that comes against you because God wants to use these very things to be glorified.

No matter just how bad your situation may seem, no matter how far away from God you feel at this moment, He has the power to draw you in and make you clean again- but only if you are willing to believe that He can.

You will be beaten down by life, but never defeated. Find purpose in these difficult seasons of your life and know that God wants to use your mess as your message to others, so that He may be glorified.

Breathe to Succeed

November 16, 2011 Comments Off on Breathe to Succeed

Once upon a time, there was a young man that wanted to make a lot of money. So he went to this guru, the guru told him to meet him at the beach the next morning at 4am.

The next day, the young man showed up in a suit at the beach at 4am. He was planning on making money, not swimming. The old man grabs his hand and asks him “How bad do you want to be succesfull?” He said “Real bad.”

So the old man tells him to walk out in the water, so he walks out until the water was at his knees. The old man said “Keep walking”, he walked until the water was at his chin.

The old man told him again to keep walking, but the young man said “You are crazy- I don’t want to be a lifeguard, I want to make money.” But he took another step until he was completely under water.

The old man held his head down while he was under water, just before the young man passed out the old man raised him up.

The old man asked “When you were under water, what did you want to do?” He said “I wanted to breathe” the old man said “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, you will be successful.”

The only thing you are trying to do is get air when you are under water. You don’t care about someone texting you, going to a party, watching tv, about that cute guy or girl- all you care about is breathing. But when you get to the point that you want to be succesful as bad as you want to breathe, you will be succesfull.

So many people think they want to be succesfull, but they care more about other things then they do than success. You just kind of want it- you’d rather be cool or popular than succesful.

Some of you love sleep more than you love success, but you have to be willing to even give up sleep. If you go to sleep, you might miss the opportunity to be succesfull if you sleep.

How bad do you want it? I realize I have to commit my very being to this: I have to eat it, breathe it, see it. Understand that and work hard and this world is yours.

Where Am I?
